UPI DOWN: A major disruption in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system on Saturday, April 12, 2025, brought digital transactions to a halt across India. Popular payment platforms including Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay experienced widespread outages, leaving users unable to complete payments, transfer funds, or access core features of the apps.
Thousands of users took to social media to complain about failed transactions and app errors. Many reported being stuck at checkout counters and during critical online payments.
According to data from online monitoring platforms, complaints began to spike during the evening hours. Over 3,000 issues were reported in a short time span, with the majority of users facing payment failures, followed by trouble with fund transfers and log-in glitches.
Digital wallet services and UPI-enabled banking apps, including those of major banks like the State Bank of India (SBI), also faced technical disruptions.

Responding to growing concern, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) acknowledged the issue. In an official update, NPCI confirmed that the UPI network had encountered “intermittent technical issues” leading to partial transaction declines. However, they added that the problem has now been resolved and the system has stabilized.
This unexpected breakdown once again highlights the dependence of millions of Indians on real-time digital payment services and the urgent need for stronger, more resilient financial infrastructure.
While services have reportedly resumed, users are advised to check their transaction status and bank accounts for any discrepancies.
